Global Brain has invested in Rhinoflux Inc., a company developing next-generation Bio-Energy with Carbon Capture & Storage (BECCS) plants

Global Brain has invested in Rhinoflux Inc. (Rhinoflux), a company developing next-generation BECCS plants, through its Shimadzu Future Innovation Fund L.P. (Shimadzu FIF).

Rhinoflux is developing BECCS plants that leverage chemical energy obtained from the reduction reaction of metallic ions instead of biomass combustion to generate power. This technology can reduce power generation costs by more than half and capture carbon dioxide as a by-product with a purity of over 99.9%. As less expensive and clean electric power supply is vital to achieve carbon neutrality, Rhinoflux’s technology is highly anticipated as it can effectively use biomass resources, whose elevated costs had been an issue with existing technologies.

The company was founded in April 2024 by an Entrepreneur in Residence at Kyoto University Innovation Capital Co., Ltd. based on Kyoto University’s research achievements. With this funding, it plans to manufacture a prototype to demonstrate small-scale power generation and CO2 capture and enhance its structure of R&D and business development.

Global Brain has decided to invest in Rhinoflux because of its outstanding reaction engineering technology and excellent management team. Global Brain will contribute to the growth of Rhinoflux’s business in cooperation with Shimadzu Corporation.
