Global Brain has invested in PorMedTec Co., Ltd. (PorMedTec), a company at the forefront of xenotransplantation using bioengineered medical-grade porcine organs, through its JGC MIRAI Innovation Fund L.P. (JGC MIRAI Innovation Fund). PorMedTec was founded in February 2017, building on the research findings of the Meiji University International Institute for Bio-Resource Research (MUIIBR) under the leadership of Professor Hiroshi Nagashima. The company employs gene editing and somatic cell cloning technologies to develop Designated Pathogen-Free (DPF) medical-grade pigs. In February 2024, in collaboration with eGenesis, a U.S.-based global leader in xenotransplantation, PorMedTec successfully produced genetically engineered porcine donors in Japan for transplantation. Since November 2024, PorMedTec has also been conducting kidney transplant trials from these pigs to monkeys. These achievements aim to address the critical shortage of organ donors in Japan, ease the burden on patients awaiting transplants, and establish a sustainable framework for the medical application of genetically engineered porcine organs. Global Brain has decided to invest in PorMedTec, recognising its unique capabilities in the field of xenotransplantation and the demonstrated expertise of its scientific and managerial team. Looking ahead, Global Brain will collaborate with the JGC Group to support PorMedTec’s business growth and drive advancements in xenotransplantation.
